Baby Nursery Furniture

One of the most fun parts of preparing for the arrival of your little one is decorating your baby’s nursery. From big decisions like which baby cot, bassinet or changing table to choose, to smaller ones like which murals or wall colours to select, assembling your baby’s first bedroom can be a joyful, rewarding task.

Baby furniture tips

Of course while choosing nursery furniture can be fun, it can also be a little overwhelming too, simply due to the sheer volume of options on offer. In these cases it’s always useful to bear a few guidelines in mind to help you narrow down your choices.

  • Safety. This is the key to all baby furniture. No sharp corners, no rough edges and absolutely no lead-based paint. Babies are delightful, curious, wiggly things, and the safer you can keep them at all times, the better.
  • Comfort. Your baby will spend most of his or her time sleeping – which means the more comfortable your baby cot or bassinet, the better. Light, neutral colours will create a restful space for you and your little one, while cosy baby room furniture will encourage a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
  • Organisation. Babies are a joy to have, but the amount of chaos they create can be unbelievable. Stay on top of your baby care by organising your nursery as best you can – ample storage space in your baby changing station or compactum, lots of shelves and drawers, and easy-to-find baby supplies and accessories.

Must-have furniture for your baby’s nursery

Now that you know what to bear in mind, it’s time to know what to look for! While ultimately the decoration of your baby’s room is up to you, there are a few pieces of baby furniture that are always must-haves for any nursery.

Baby cot

Before your baby can sleep in a big girl or big boy bed, they’ll need to sleep in a baby cot or crib. When looking for your baby’s cot, make sure to choose one with sturdy legs that won’t wobble – they’ll be sleeping in it for at least 2 years, so the better sleep they get, the better sleep you’ll get too!

Baby bassinet

If you’d prefer to start your baby out with something smaller than a cot, a baby bassinet (or cradle) could be just the thing. A comfy sleeping place for babies up to 4 or 5 months, bassinets are convenient in that they can moved from room to room, and kept by your bed for late-night feedings and comforting.

Baby changing station

You may start out by thinking a waterproof mat on a bed and a basket of supplies is enough, but trust us, you’ll need a proper baby changing station eventually. In your baby’s first year alone, you’ll be changing 2 400 nappies, so make sure your changing table (or compactum) is comfortable, sturdy and can store enough baby accessories to make the process go smoothly.

Once your baby becomes a toddler you can start looking at bigger kids’ bedroom furniture, and more elaborate bedding and décor, but for now good, solid, comfortable basics are enough to keep you and baby happy from playtime to bedtime and beyond.
